| TBI Workshops/Consultation
as followed:
TBI Workshop,General Information
This workshop provides an overview of TBI, definition, causes, consequences
and educational implications. It offers general knowledge to all
school personnel working with students with brain injury as they
return to school.
A packet of information is given to all workshop participants.
Participants:
Teachers, support staff, therapists, administration and families
Time: 1-11/2 hours
TBI Workshop, Specific to the Student with TBI
This workshop provides the same general overview of brain
injury outlined above. However, it incorporates specific information
related to the student identified with brain injury. Strategies
related to this student are also discussed. A question and answer
period follows that offers the support staff working with the student
additional information.
Participants:
Teachers, support staff, therapists, administration and families
Time: 11/2 –2 hours
Transition Workshop
Many students with TBI need follow up, from year to year
or from school to school, as they progress through the system. Each
year different staff members work with the student and a workshop
on TBI may be necessary to prepare receiving teachers and support
staff. The workshop provides general information on brain injury
and specifics relating to the student who is transitioning.
Participants:
Teachers, support staff, therapists, administration and families
Time: 1-2 hours
TBI Consultation
Following an observation of the student, the TBI consultant
provides support to school personnel regarding strategies, evaluation,
accommodations, modifications and IEP development.
Participants:
Classroom teacher, special education teacher, support staff
and families
Time: 1-2 hours depending upon the student’s needs
TBI Follow-up Consultation
Depending on the needs of staff and student, the Resource
Center staff is available for follow up visitations and consultations
Participants:
Classroom teacher, special education teacher, support staff
and families
Time: 2-3 follow-up meetings
In addition to workshops, the TBI Resource Center provides a brain
injury prevention session that addresses good health and safety
recommendations. It focuses on young children and follows the health
curriculum standards. Many brain injuries are preventable and children
should learn good health and safety strategies early on.
Head Injury Prevention Workshop
Age group: Early Childhood grades Preschool-Grade 2
Health Standard 1 Goals:
The children will be able to describe the basic structure and function
of the head and brain.
The children will be able to explain how head injuries can be treated
and prevented.
Health Standard 3 Goals:
The children will be able to develop injury prevention and management
strategies for personal health.
The children will be able to compare behaviors that are safe to
those that are risky or harmful.
Set induction: The instructor will enter the room “geared
up” on a skateboard with a “friend”, a toy remote
control skateboarder Eggbert, not geared up with a head injury.
Lesson plan steps:
1. A discussion about how come the “friend” acquired a
head injury while the instructor didn’t will follow. Children
will be asked to make predictions.
2. A demonstration using an egg will follow. The
egg will be compared to a head – a hard outer surface to protect
a soft inner surface. “Fred’s head” will be used
to show the comparison. Next, using an unprotected egg, the instructor
will show what happens when the egg comes in contact with a force.
The same demonstration using a protected egg will follow to demonstrate
how helmets protect heads.
3. A description about the structure and function
of the head and brain using graphics will be given.
4. The children will create an “egg head”
and a protective gear for the “egg head”.
5. The children can test the protective gear they
created for their eggs.
Closure: A book created by one of the consultants, “What
Should Eggbert Do?”, will be presented to provide an overview
and to evaluate how much the children can apply what has been taught.
Also, disbursement of resource materials to recapture and reinforce
the lesson will be given. (Items may vary depending upon availability)
Time: 45min.-1 hour
Cost: $30.
