We have taken the liberty to combine the knowledge and practices of two important, emerging fields of study and practice:

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
The Center for Social and Emotional Education (CSEE)
The Center For Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

We've learned that together they are a power force in supporting students' academic performance and achievement.

SEL emphasizes these essential competencies:

PBIS emphasizes a school-wide system of structures and practices that helps adults - teachers, administrators, specialists, paraprofessionals, parents, staff of community-based organizations and agencies - to coordinate student support.

.
  UNIVERSAL supports for all students
.
  TARGETED supports for some students
.
INTENSIVE supports for a few students

Based on our experience with SEL and PBIS we believe:
.
Students perform and achieve best academically when they have adequate social, emotional and behavioral competencies.
.
Social, Emotional, and Behavioral competencies are taught and learned in many ways:
-
Transmitted naturally and imperceptibly in the context of daily life through family and community.
-
Observed in role models and imitated.
-
Taught and practiced through discreet lessons.
-
Practiced naturally through classroom and school-wide structures.
.
  Everyone can achieve the competencies.
.
Repetition - many teaching and learning experiences, in many contexts, over much time - is the key.

So, what is SEBL, again?

Students say:
".Knowing who you are, what you feel, how to get along."
".Learning how to take care of yourself."
".Learning new things and not being afraid of trying."

Teachers say:
".Modeling the behavior you hope to see in your students."
".Creating experiences in which students learn to take responsibility for their own learning and their own behavior."
".Ways to create that spark of community in the classroom."
".The more students 'belong' and 'take ownership for the learning environment, the more I can teach and the fewer problems we all have."

Parents say:
".Emphasizing the positive. Building on my child's strengths."
".Teaching and practicing life skills that everyone needs. Relationships, partnerships AND knowledge are what get you through life."
".Giving my child ways of learning her ABCs and being human at the same time."

The research says:
".Providing experiences over a student's school career that model, teach, and reinforce skills of communication, cooperation, helping, and problem solving."
".Creating safe, healthy and nurturing environments that support the school's academic mission."
".Consciously weaving the lessons of self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, and relationship skills into the daily life of the school."
