Student Contract
Research shows that teacher assistant use, particularly 1:1 teacher assistants, can sometimes cause a student with special needs to become dependent on the teacher assistant. The student may experience social isolation along with the teacher assistant - especially in inclusive settings. A student contract is one way to support a student in making personal decisions about his/her education and encourage self-determination. Download a student contract form developed by Mary Beth Doyle from St. Michael's College, Burlington, VT and used with her permission. Instructional teams may find it useful to use/adapt this form to identify appropriate options for students for: 1) Class participation; 2) Reading: In-class and homework; 3) Papers: short and long; 4) Community Service; 5) Tests; 6) Grading; and 7) Class specific requirements. It can also be adapted to outline teacher assistant supports - including when they are and are not needed.
